Chapter Fifteen

On Friday Chelsea looked out the windows, waiting for Jane to show up. She had said she’d be there by five. Otherwise they might wait an hour or more to eat.

At five Jane parked her Honda Accord in the driveway, and Chelsea hurriedly put on her coat and gloves and went out the side door. It was March, but it felt more like January.

“There’s no rush,” Jane said.

“I didn’t want you to have to get out of your car.”

“Spring will come, I promise. We usually have a snowstorm or two in April.”

Warmed by Jane’s grin, Chelsea settled into the passenger seat. “At least your car is warm. Where are we going?”

“I thought we could try Mark’s. I’ve had good fish there. What do you think?”

“Fine with me. Martha and I went to Adler Brau Brewery and Restaurant, and it was good. I haven’t been to many fish fries since I came back.”

“We can go there if you want.” Jane was looking at her, one hand on the gear stick.

“No, Mark’s is good.” That’s where all the old people went.

Mark’s was a babble of voices as the hostess seated them in a corner booth. They would have to talk loudly, and there were things she wanted to ask Jane that shouldn’t be said in a shout.

“I’d forgotten how noisy it is in here,” Jane said. “We could go somewhere else.” She raised her eyebrows in question. “But most restaurants are noisy.”

“No. Let’s stay put. So how was the rest of your day?” Chelsea asked.

Jane shrugged. “Nothing happened worth mentioning. How about yours?”

“The same.” Any personal talk would have to wait. “I did make brownies this afternoon.” She’d baked them as an afterthought because she had a box mix on hand.

“For our dessert?” Jane asked.

Chelsea nodded.

“Good idea.”

She was comfortably full when they got back in Jane’s car, closing the door against a cold wind.

“You know, I used to love winter,” Jane said.

“What did you love about it?” Chelsea asked.

“The snow. I even liked to shovel, and I loved to ski.”

“I did too, but I’ve always loved summer best. I like it hot enough to sweat at night.”

Jane laughed. “So, how do you like living here?”

The wind was blowing snow across the road in front of them. “I grew up here, you know. It’s sometimes lonely now, not like it was when I was young. I guess I’m used to living with someone. What do you do in the evenings?” In the passing streetlights Chelsea could see Jane smile.

“What everybody else does, I suppose. Watch TV. Read. Sometimes I go for a walk. Sometimes a friend comes over.”

“Don’t you miss having someone to go places with you, to talk to, to just have around?”

Jane shot her an indecipherable look. “Sometimes. Then I call a friend.” She parked in the driveway and they hurried inside.

Chelsea was glad she didn’t have to go out again that night. She turned on lights that led to the living room and went into the kitchen to get the brownies.
